DEPARTMENT OF KAYACHIKITSA

Ayurveda is having holistic approach towards life mainly concerned with the treatment of body, mind and soul. Kaya Chikitsa is one of the important branches of Ayurveda and it is the first branch of Ashtang Ayurved that deals with general medicine, where kaya means body and chikitsa means treatment. This branch deals with various physical and psychological diseases like Fever, Rakta-pitta, Shotha, Prameha, etc.

Kaya also refers to agni on entire ayurvedic therapeutics is based on the concept of Agni. Correction of Agni is the basic line of treatment for most of the diseases. The concept of Kaya (Agni) is very unique to Ayurveda. It is responsible for biotransformation. The energy required for all activities in our body is provided by Agni. The energy can neither be created nor destroyed, but it can be converted from one form to another. Biological Kaya transforms the energy derived from the food and the air, to the energy which can be utilized by our cells. The vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats etc. we eat, are converted by this Kaya to the bodily substances. As long as this Kaya is balanced, all the activities in body are performed smoothly. Any disturbance in this Kaya causes imbalance in the equilibrium and disturbs physiology leading to a disease. Ayurvedic therapeutics focuses on the restoration and maintenance of biological Kaya.

Another unique aspect of kayachikitsa is Rasayana (Rejuvenation) and Vajikaran (Aphrodisiac) Rasayan chikitsa is useful for promotion of health and curing enhances the sexual vigour and useful to procreate an ideal Progeny.

The role of mind in the causation and cure of diseases is well recognized in kayachikitsa, hence due importance is given to strict mental discipline and adherence to moral values. For the same postment of manasroga is described in kayachikitsa.
